Non-optional Services
If your pet has fleas at the time of surgery, he/she will be treated with Capstar, a safe, rapid acting flea treatment. The cost to you is $10 for cats / $10 for dogs and is due at the time of pick up.
If our veterinarian determines your cat has evidence of intestinal parasites at the time of surgery, a broad-spectrum dewormer, Profender, will be administered and you will be responsible for the $20 fee at the time of pick up.
If a reduceable umbilical hernia is noticed at the time of surgery, it will be repaired. The cost is $50-$75.
All female dogs 1 year of age and older will be charged an additional $50 mature spay fee in addition to the cost of surgery for your dog’s weight class.
State law requires all companion animals be up to date on their rabies vaccine. If you do not have proof of updated Rabies vaccine, they will be administered at the time of surgery. The cost is $25 per vaccine. See savings available with a bundled package.
Restrictions
Your pet must be feeling well the day of surgery and be free of signs of contagious diseases. Pets must be at least 3 months of age and at least 3 pounds. On the morning of the appointment, our veterinarian will clear your dog for surgery by performing a brief examination while you wait. If your pet is deemed overweight, surgery will be performed only at the discretion of our veterinarian and a difficulty charge will be added. Our veterinarian may deem surgery unsafe and ask that you return after your pet loses weight. Cat examinations are done without owners present. You can assess the BMI of your animal by clicking the buttons below to view our cat and dog body-weight assessment guides. There is no extra charge for pregnancy.
Department of Agriculture Low Income Voucher Program
The Animal Population Control Program, administered by the Connecticut State Department of Agriculture (DOAG), provides families with financial support (voucher) for pet vaccinations and sterilization. Questions about the Low-Income Program can be directed to the Animal Population Control Program (APCP) by email (agr.apcp@ct.gov) or by calling 860-713-2507. Nutmeg Clinic does not provide the vouchers and cannot answer questions on the application process. We are one of the many participating veterinarians in the low income voucher program who accepts the vouchers after they have been distributed.
The voucher covers spay/neuter surgery and rabies and distemper vaccines if needed. If your pet is already up to date on their rabies vaccine, please bring the rabies certificate with you to your surgery appointment; otherwise, your pet will receive another rabies vaccine.
The following co-pays are due at the time of scheduling your appointment along with your voucher (these fees apply to rescue groups as well):
- Pit bulls: $25
- Other breed dogs: $60
- Cats: $25
We cannot schedule your appointment until you have your voucher in hand. Vouchers are valid for up to 60 days from the date of issue. Sorry, we cannot accept expired vouchers.
Feral Cat Program $60
Please Note: Our feral cat program does not pertain to tame/friendly strays or companion animals. Ferals are unsocialized, wild cats that congregate in colonies and reproduce at an alarming rate. The only way to get the population under control is to Trap/Neuter/Return (TNR) also know as Trap/Neuter/Vaccinate/Return (TNVR). Feral cats should be cared for by a caretaker for feeding and maintenance of the colony.
Our affordable feral cat package includes spay/neuter surgery, rabies & FVRCP (distemper combination) vaccines, a brief exam, subcutaneous fluids and an ear tip, which is a cut across the top of the left ear to easily denote the cat has been spayed/neutered and vaccinated. Under this program, ear tips are required; there are no exceptions. In addition to the ear tip, your feral cat will receive a small green tattoo on the abdomen, which readily indicates that he/she has been spayed/neutered and negates any question otherwise.
All ferals must arrive in a humane trap with a clean towel lining the bottom and a sheet covering the trap. We require that only one cat is in each trap and that food has been removed by midnight the night before surgery. If a cat is deemed friendly by our staff, the price will be adjusted to the regular spay/neuter price. Contact us to set up an appointment and to rent a trap if needed. Learn more about our TNVR program here.
